The programme will support you in increasing your knowledge base whilst enhancing your interpersonal skills.

On successful completion of the programme you will be offered Associate Membership (ACMI) of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) or, with three years of management experience, you may adopt full member status (MCMI). For more information visit www.managers.org.uk.

How you learn

You are taught by experienced lecturers and practitioners from the UK. This means that every six-to-eight weeks a subject expert from Teesside University will fly to Manama and deliver a masterclass for each module. You work with your peers on individual and group activities. Assessment for each module is discussed at the masterclass and, through the MDCI office, you maintain contact with your tutor.

MDCI personnel are available to provide full local support, in addition to you and your tutor keeping in touch via Blackboard, the Teesside University Virtual Learning Environment. You also have access to the University’s superb online learning facilities, which includes thousands of journal articles, online databases and helpful factsheets to support your study.

What you learn

Managing People in Organisations

Managers in organisations recognise that, if they are going to be successful, they need to tap into the skills and knowledge of their employees. In this module you consider, evaluate, analyse and apply a set of principles, values and approaches to leading and managing people. You look at how people can maximise their added-value to their own development and to corporate goals.

Managing Operations and Finance

This module examines the principles and practice of managing finances and operations within organisations. You look at how to manage resources efficiently and effectively within a dynamic environment using operational and financial information. You also examine the pressures and impact this has on organisational control.

Business Environment and Strategy

One of the main leadership challenges facing the organisation is how to develop strategies which reflect changes in the external business environment. In this module you explore key aspects of the national and international environment, including the impact of economic, political, technological, social and ethical factors. You then go on to explore the key concepts and techniques involved in the process of strategic decision making and strategic management of the organisation.

Management Theory and Practice

This module explores a range of approaches to studying management and managing, including the findings from some of those studies. You evaluate various approaches to the history of management thought, compare the main theoretical approaches/frameworks and critically evaluate their contribution to management practice.

Managing Across Cultures

This module aims to provide students with an appreciation of cultural differences and the impact they can have at the individual and organisational level in an international context. Students will be made aware of the key theories and concepts that underpin the subject and will be exposed to new and challenging aspects of managing in an increasingly global business environment.

The module will explore the meaning of culture and the nature of culture with emphasis on cross-cultural dimensions. Students will also be exposed to concepts based on time, values and cultural contexts. This fundamental underpinning then allows the module to develop a more strategic view of cross cultural management and will consider the relationships between culture and leadership, culture and marketing and doing business in a selected number of countries.

Management Research

The primary objective of this module is to provide you with a selection of research strategies, and to illustrate the significant role that theoretical principles play in the research process. The module facilitates the design and completion of your dissertation.

Dissertation

This module requires you to undertake a major research project related to a business or organisational issue as a written report (dissertation). You are supported by a supervising tutor who monitors progress and appraises your ongoing performance. Usually the dissertation should be completed within three semesters of the original module enrolment date.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally be expected to hold an honours degree or equivalent qualification. However, those without an honours degree who can demonstrate relevant work experience are encouraged to apply.

Start date

The MSc Management programme starts in February 2012 in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.
